The Ford Mustang is pure American automotive lore with multi-generational admirers dating back to the 1960′s. It was the intermediate sized muscle car, offering big block engines that delivered sporting dash and style, at a price nearly everyone could afford. Lee Iacocca, Ford’s General Manager back in the day, always envisioned a small sports car to be the next hot item in the street wars. He understood that in the mid-’60s the “Baby-boomers,” the largest population bubble in history was coming of age, and there was every reason to believe they wouldn’t want cars that were anything like their parent’s.
The production Mustang was revealed to the public for the first time inside the Ford Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair on April 17, 1964 – two months and nine days after the Beatles first came to New York to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. It went on sale at Ford dealers that same day. Recently one of the rarest and most powerful Mustangs ever produced, the 1969 Boss 429, fetched a staggering auction price of $605,000.
