The 2005 to 2011 Scion tC is an evolutionary step forward in the tC model. It comes with a 2.5L engine with variable valve timing to offer an increase of 19 horsepower over the previous tC. Toyota has improved the handling and amenities of the car giving it a broader appeal. The 2011 tC is a great car and improving on the engine power is a good step forward. AEM wanted to take it a step further by creating a Cold Air Intake system that focused on achieving true repeatable power gains through the power band.
Designing a performance intake system for one of the most popular sport compact cars of the last decade was a no brainer for AEM, considering the company was founded on sport compact tuning in the early 90′s. Although the decision to design an intake for the tC was a no brainer, designing the system would be a challenge because the stock inlet duct is small for the engine and therefore restricts power. The problem was that to increase the duct diameter to reduce restriction would cause the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor to report the wrong air flow to the ECU and cause a check engine light or worst a lean condition that could be harmful to the engine. Fortunately AEM has the Electronically Tuned Intake (ETI) module to compensate for this situation. The ETI allowed AEM to increase the flow and tuning of the intake duct without the use of restrictive flow diverters or necked down tubes to trick the MAF sensor. AEM’s ETI system electronically works with the MAF sensor to ensure an accurate amount of fuel is being delivered even though the airflow may be different from that what is expected by the stock system. This means the vehicle maintains the calibration as intended by the factory while enjoying the benefits of AEM’s custom designed aftermarket cold air intake system.
Power testing on parts 41-1405C and 41-1405P resulted in an estimated gain of 6 lbs./ft. torque and 7.5 horsepower at 6200 rpm. That’s significant add-on power from simply removing the restrictive factory intake assembly and replacing it with one of these AEM cold air intakes. The intake’s AEM Dryflow air filter is located down inside the fender well. This location supplies the engine with cooler air which contributes to the increase in engine performance. The Dryflow air filter can be easily cleaned with synthetic air filter cleaner when servicing is necessary.
